By Greg Christy, SA Squid Management Industry Association
This has been a tumultuous year for the fishing industry.
All fishing rights expired and the industry has had to reapply for their rights valid for the next 15 years.
The squid fishery has endured one of its worst year to date. The inclement weather over December and unfavourable sea conditions have all been a factor.
The industry is on closed season for the next two months, and we are hoping that 2022 is an improvement on the previous year.
Despite closure of most of Europe, the price and demand for our squid has not decreased and prices have in fact increased. Unfortunately diesel costs and increased labour costs have put a dampener on the industry.
