A cleaner city starts with the people who care enough to show up for it.
This September, communities around the world will come together for World Cleanup Day, a global movement that encourages people to take action against waste and care for the places they call home.
In Johannesburg, Pam Golding Properties Hyde Park is proud to be getting involved a little closer to home.
On Saturday, 19 September, we'll be joining the Craigpark Residents' Association for a community clean-up along the Braamfontein Spruit in Craighall Park. From 8am, residents, volunteers and local organisations will gather at the Blue Bridge on Marlborough Avenue before heading out along the banks of the Spruit.
But this year's clean-up is about more than collecting litter.
As part of the initiative, we've partnered with Pave The Way, a local organisation that creates paid, dignified work opportunities for people facing hardship.
Working alongside Cross The Divide, a Johannesburg-based NPO supporting homeless and displaced people in surrounding communities, Pave The Way helps connect people with meaningful work restoring and maintaining shared public spaces.
It means that while we're working towards a cleaner Braamfontein Spruit, the initiative is also creating an opportunity for someone to earn an income through meaningful work.
It's a simple idea with a much bigger impact: taking care of our city while taking care of the people who live in it.
See you at the Spruit
On the morning, volunteers will work their way along the Spruit with gloves, rakes and bags, collecting litter and separating recyclable materials from general waste.
The clean-up is a genuine community effort, bringing together residents and organisations committed to keeping one of Johannesburg's much-loved green spaces clean and cared for.
The Pam Golding Properties Hyde Park team will be there too. Look out for our gazebo at the Blue Bridge from 8am, where we'll be handing out water to volunteers before our agents and staff roll up their sleeves and join the clean-up.
For us, being part of a neighbourhood goes beyond property. It's also about looking after the parks, streets and shared spaces that make an area feel like home.
So, if you live nearby, work in the area or simply love the Braamfontein Spruit, we'd love to see you there.
There's no need to register. Simply arrive on the morning ready to lend a hand. Bring gloves if you have them, wear comfortable closed shoes or boots and a hat, and bring along a few large plastic bags. Rakes and litter tongs are welcome too.
A few hours, a pair of gloves and a community willing to get involved can go a long way.
Let's show the Braamfontein Spruit and Johannesburg a little love this World Cleanup Day.
