Macadamia nut farm
This enchanting farm is situated in a valley surrounded by scenic mountains.
Location:
The farm is accessible via a six-kilometer gravel road from the N4 national freeway, approximately a fifteen-minute drive from the the town of Malalane and a twenty-five minute drive to Malelane Gate, Kruger National Park.
Land and Climate:
The topography is undulating with the orchards at an elevation ranging from 458 meters to 551 meters above sea level. Summers are hot with the average maximum temperature around 31˚C and winters mild with an average minimum of 8,6˚C. The average annual rainfall varies between 550 mm to 650 mm.
Soils:
The soils are fairly uniform, consisting mainly of the Hutton form. Certain areas are more rocky, probably Glenrosa form. Soil analysis results are available.
Macadamia Orchard:
Forty-nine hectares are planted to macadamia orchards, the varieties being Beaumont (51%), 788 (16%) and A4 (33%). The trees, aged between seven and eight years old are spaced at eight meters by four meters.
Water Source:
Four registered boreholes provide 323 244 m³ per annum for irrigation as well as domestic use. Water analysis reports are available.
Irrigation:
A low flow drip system provides water to thirty nine hectares. The balance of the orchard, approximately ten hectares are currently farmed dry land.
Electricity:
The farm is well-equipped with two three-phase electricity supply points, one a 50 kVA and the other a 100 kVA.
Building improvements:
Buildings include two old houses currently used for storage and staff accommodation, a barn which houses the macadamia plant and a pump house.
