Villiersdorp, known as the Pearl of the Overberg, was established in 1844 by Veldkornet P.H. DeVilliers and declared a municipality in 1885. The village was given the name of De Villiers Dorp in order to reflect the French influence amongst the inhabitants of that time, due to the fact that many were descendants of French Huguenot families.

On the outskirts of Villiersdorp is the Theewaterskloof lake which is the 5th largest lake in South Africa, with a yacht club providing watersports, bass fishing and scenic catamaran cruises. Bordering on this spectacular lake we have Theewaterkloof Country Estate, a private secure village with 24-hour access control, offering a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool and private beach to the residents of the estate.
