An Expansive Karoo Farm with Excellent Permanent Irrigation

This farm is situated 25km from Aberdeen and only 90km from Graaff-Reinet. It has been in the present family for close on 100 years and has been very well preserved and managed. This property is ideally suited to sheep, goats and most of the plains game. The very neat three-bedroom homestead has two bathrooms, an open-plan lounge/dining room/ kitchen, a study and a patio with a built-in braai. From here the unending views of the distant mountains create a feeling of tranquility. The Bull River together with four other tributaries traverse through the property. Six weirs have been erected at key points creating fantastic watercourses with abundant grazing. The rest of the farm is mostly Karoo Plains with an excellent diversity of Karoo dwarf shrubs, succulents, larger palatable shrubs, mixed grass veld and acacia thickets along the watercourses. Presently it is successfully farmed with sheep and angora goats. Naturally occurring kudu, springbuck, steenbuck, duiker, etc roam on the property. The farm is divided into 12 camps with a minimum of two stock watering points in each camp. Together with this are 30 small camps around the house which are used during the lambing season. The stock waters are supplied by 6 solar pumps, 6 windmills and various small earth dams. Over and above this the farm has 28ha of excellent permanent irrigation. This is supplied by 5 strong boreholes delivering fifteen thousand to thirty-eight thousand litres per hour each. A large earth dam which is fed from a diversion weir in the Bull River supplements the irrigation. All the irrigation is under a very efficient overhead “Floppy System”. The main production is Lucerne and intensive onion and vegetable seed harvesting. A 60sq metre shed is equipped with blowers for the drying process. A second shed of 100sq metres houses a pelleting factory and the third shed of 120sq metres is used for Lucerne storage. Some of the sheds are equipped with lambing pens. The perimeter fencing is standard 1,4m netting fence and the internal fencing is all stock proof. An excellent road infrastructure enables easy access to all portions of the farm. The homestead, outbuildings, sheds and irrigation are all powered by Eskom. The farm can carry approximately 320 Large Stock Units. Rainfall is 250mm pa. Machinery, equipment and livestock can be negotiated separately. A commercially viable Karoo farm with great diversified opportunities
