‘Mazeppa’ - an iconic Great Karoo farm for sale

Agriculture
The historic Karoo farm ‘Mazeppa’

From time to time various landmark Karoo properties come up for sale. Each Karoo town and farming district has at least one of these magnificent properties which among others epitomises luxurious Karoo living with their grand architecture and exquisite settings. Often these properties are handed down in the Karoo families and every now and then some of these come onto the open market. One such property is ‘Mazeppa’ located in the Eastern Cape between Middelburg and Graaff-Reinet. Mazeppa has had only three owners in its rich history and the current family have been in the district since the early 1800’s.

The farm, like its name, has a fascinating story, because as the legend of Mazeppa goes, he – Mazeppa, endured a tumultuous ride tied on the back of a wild horse, which bore him across many miles of country and eventually brought him to the land of the Cossacks.

This magnificent home was built in 1929 as a seven-bedroom guest house by a sheep farmer named Stephen Botha, who used bricks made on the farm. At that time, goods and passenger trains ran past the farm several times a day, from Johannesburg to Mossel Bay, and there was a passenger station a stone’s throw from the house. It was an extremely popular route, renowned far and wide, and Mazeppa became well known for its visitors, mainly couples from England who would come out to South Africa and catch the train to Mazeppa to have their honeymoon, in this grand guest house, sumptuously furnished in the Victorian style.

Currently Mazeppa is a magnificent home with lavish landscaped gardens manicured and further developed over the last two decades into a beautiful mature garden. The home is set on 500 hectares of prime Karoo land in a beautiful valley, yet with easy access from the N9. This is probably one of the most ideal locations for a luxury Karoo guest house (as was the case almost 90 years ago) or as a prestigious private lifestyle Karoo farm. The house currently has five bedrooms and spacious living areas with a wraparound corner veranda leading onto two of these guest rooms. Other features are the high ceilings, wide passage with wooden floors and glass doors with sash windows looking out over the gardens and Karoo scenery. The array of outbuildings includes a cottage in the poplar trees, and adjacent to the manor house is beautiful building with matching gables for general farm use. Close by is a very large and magnificient period barn for horses, vehicles and general use.

The farm Mazeppa has abundant water with a strong fountain which feeds into dams for all farm usage such as the gardens and 20 hectares of pasture. The scenery is mountainous and mostly grasslands with plenty of wildlife and game. The 500ha of prime land offers many options for horse, livestock or game farming. From a luxury accommodation business viewpoint the beautiful farmyard setup and the homestead are located less than 1km from the Karoo’s most scenic national road - the N9 towards Graaff-Reinet. Also, one of the most scenic passenger train lines that cut through the Sneeuberg Mountains runs in a gorge between the cliffs and the river behind the house. The line has been out of use for 20 years, however work is being done to re-open this scenic rail route giving further options as was popular in the late 1920’s.

The historic Karoo farm Mazeppa is exclusively available through Pam Golding Properties for R9.85 million. Contact Wayne Rubidge of Pam Golding Properties Karoo on +27 (0) 82 432 9364 or email wayne.rubidge@pamgolding.co.za.
