Before the Afrikaans settlers arrived in 1840 the area was mostly inhabited by Ndebele. Pretoria was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorious, a Voortrekker leader. His intention was originally to name the area after his father, Andries, who played a significant role in the Battle of Blood River.
The area has since been renamed the City of Tshwane, but the CBD is still known as Pretoria. Pretoria remains the administrative capital of South Africa.
