A BRIEF HISTORY OF BENONI
Benoni came into being in 1881 and was given its name by Surveyor general John Rissik. Meaning “son of my sorrow”, Benoni boasts a rich cultural history. Gold was discovered in the area in 1887 and the Chimes Mine was established by Cornishmen; the village became known as “Little Cornwall” for a time. The area was transformed in 1906 by the planting of trees
and the creation of rivers and dams (for the use of the mines). Today the dams are used as fishing holes and the rivers are full of fish, making them excellent recreational spots for boating. This in turn increases the value of properties
in this sought after residential area.
In 1907, the first Synagogue and the Benoni Race Track were opened. A horse-lover’s paradise, it is believed that Benoni has more horse stables per square kilometre
than any other place in the Southern Hemisphere.
