Pieter Norbertus Graaff who married Anna de Villiers, daughter of P H De Villiers, whose family gave their name to our village, built Oude Huis in 1850. When Sir David de Villiers Graaff died the house was rented to the Nederduiste Geherformeerde church and served as a rectory until Hannie Botha, sister of Sir David, inherited the property where she lived till her death.
The historical home, Oude Radyn(c1844), is possibly the only building in the Cape to have Batavian wooden gutters and down pipes The descendants of the original owners still run the farm today, 135 years later.
ST Augustine's The Anglican church was built in 1858 by Francis Brett. His wife is buried in the vault on the property, possibly with several of his children.
The town also has a museum within a building that dates back to 1845 and was declared a national monument in 1994.
Sir David de Villiers Graaff , the son of Pieter Norbertus Graaff, established the De Villiers Graaff school, with 2 donations made in 1906 and 1937.
The Theewaterskloof lake is approximately 52 square km and was officially opened on 24 April 1982. It is now the hub of all water sport, camping and fishing activities. |
