Introduction to Villiersdorp

Villiersdorp, known as the Pearl of the Overberg, was established in 1844 by Veldkornet P.H. DeVilliers and declared a municipality in 1885. The village was given the name of DE VILLIERS DORP in order to reflect the French influence amongst the inhabitants of that time, due to the fact that many were descendants of French Huguenot families.

Overview

The Mediterranean climate allows for many outdoor activities and plays an important role in our fruit export. Villiersdorp is situated just over an hours drive from Cape Town, 25 minutes from Caledon Casino and the picturesque town of Franschhoek. The seaside town of Hermanus, which boasts an annual whale festival, is only an hour's drive away.

On the outskirts of Villiersdorp is the Theewaterskloof lake which is the 5 th largest lake in South Africa, with a yacht club providing watersports, bass fishing and scenic catamaran cruises.

Bordering on this spectacular lake we have Theewaterkloof Country Estate, a private secure village with 24-hour access control, offering a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool and private beach to the residents of the estate.

We have a variety of Bed and Breakfasts, to choose from. Our Information Bureau can be contacted for further details.

History

Pieter Norbertus Graaff who married Anna de Villiers, daughter of P H De Villiers, whose family gave their name to our village, built Oude Huis in 1850. When Sir David de Villiers Graaff died the house was rented to the Nederduiste Geherformeerde church and served as a rectory until Hannie Botha, sister of Sir David, inherited the property where she lived till her death.

The historical home, Oude Radyn(c1844), is possibly the only building in the Cape to have Batavian wooden gutters and down pipes The descendants of the original owners still run the farm today, 135 years later.

ST Augustine's The Anglican church was built in 1858 by Francis Brett. His wife is buried in the vault on the property, possibly with several of his children.

The town also has a museum within a building that dates back to 1845 and was declared a national monument in 1994.

Sir David de Villiers Graaff , the son of Pieter Norbertus Graaff, established the De Villiers Graaff school, with 2 donations made in 1906 and 1937.

The Theewaterskloof lake is approximately 52 square km and was officially opened on 24 April 1982. It is now the hub of all water sport, camping and fishing activities.
Culture

We have camping facilities for those who enjoy the outdoors. Endemic to the area are over 130 species of flora, which can be viewed on our various hiking trails. We also have 4+4 trails to choose from.

Due to the tranquillity and beautiful scenery surrounding our village, a thriving artistic community has developed. Many of their works can be viewed at our local arts & crafts centre.

For the more sports minded we offer bowling, tennis, swimming and for the adventurous, horse trails are available.

In October, at the end of our winter fruit season, an annual harvest festival is celebrated.
