History
Founded in 1857 by Sir Robert Stanford. He retired from the British Army and supplied the Cape with fresh meat, fruit and vegetables. He later became the victim of an anti-convict agitation protesting against the British Governments decision to settle convicts in the Cape. Due to this, he was chased off his land, banks refused to deal with him and his children expelled from school and his dying child refused medical help.

On their historic tour in 1798, Mr. Andrew and Lady Anne Barnard visited Mrs. Brands farm, Kleine Rivier Valley - which later became Sir Robert's Stanfords home.
Architecture
Overwhelmingly Victorian with the oldest houses situated on the historic village commonage with its quaint "broekie lace" houses, deep verandas and shuttered windows. The Anglican Church of St. Thomas is much sort after for weddings in the village. The historic old mill - unfortunately - not in use, leafy lanes, quiet cul de sacs and houses nestling on the banks of the Klein River - makes this a much sort-after village.

Lei water is still available to the original Victorian properties. Ducks can often be seen sailing down these "rivers" and always have right of way.
Culture & Local Amenities
Stanford boasts a thriving artist community with exhibitions at various historical locations in the village. The Birkenhead Brewery has hosted the Welsh Choir and a variety of choral, musical and other entertainment. A new "Stanford Theatrical Society" is envisaged with plays performed at our annual Village Festival hosted annually in October.

Thriving eateries and bistros, nearby wine estates - open for tastings - and the renowned Klein River Cheese factory add to the continental atmosphere.
Tourism
Because of its close proximity to Cape Town and Hermanus, the whales in De Kelders, white shark diving at Kleinbaai, Stanford is a popular choice for tourists looking for that "jewel off the beaten track" village.

Guest Houses and self-catering accommodation are of a high standard. The "African Queen" and "Platanna" offer river cruises, bird watching with expert guides, horse riding, hiking, light aircraft trips over Walker Bay.

There are antique shops, junk shops and general dealer, library, information bureau, well known "Peregrine Farm" stall and quaint nurseries.
