Introduction to Sedgefield |
|
| Sedgefield, in
the center of the Garden Route area. An area so astonishingly
beautiful, that it has been called “A taste of Eden”
. The Garden Route is a mosaic of silent, mysterious forests,
sweeping lakes and wetlands, empty unspoilt beaches and
narrow, winding passes. It could be said (and it often
has!) that Sedgefield-on-Sea is an outdoor lover’s
paradise. A picturesque seaside village that offers space
and peace for those who wish to relax surrounded by the
lakes of the Garden Route, fynbos-covered dunes, the Swartvlei
estuary and the Indian Ocean. |

The original Khoi name for
Sedgefield was “Gonnas Vlakte”. Our Village
was laid out on the farm “Sedgefield” and
people naturally assume that is where our village got
its name from, but it is not as simple as that. T L Moodie,
the surveyor lay out a village on the farm Sedgefield
and decided to give the village the same name. In Afrikaans
it means “Ruigtevlei” and because of the abundance
of water plants lying along the vlei’s edge, it
was a good choice. Moodie didn’t know that the name
Sedgefield was actually in honour of George Barrington,
the 5th viscount and rector of a
coal-mining village named Sedgefield in County Durham
in Britain. |

bass waters.
For golfers, the village boasts a nine-hole mashie course,
with some of the country’s most sought-after courses
(Fancourt and Pezula to name but two) less than forty
minutes away.
Bordering the Goukamma Nature Reserve, which has some
of South Africa’s highest vegetated dunes, and the
Wilderness National Park, which is one of the country’s
