The closest airport is in George and is served daily with flights to and from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth. Sedgefield is a small coastal village with a general low crime rate that is developed on top of a natural underground aquifer making it unique in it’s own special way.
History
The original Khoi name for Sedgefield was “Gonnas Vlakte”. Our Village was laid out on the farm “Sedgefield” and people naturally assume that is where our village got its name from, but it is not as simple as that. T L Moodie, the surveyor lay out a village on the farm Sedgefield and decided to give the village the same name. In Afrikaans it means “Ruigtevlei” and because of the abundance of water plants lying along the vlei’s edge, it was a good choice. Moodie didn’t know that the name Sedgefield was actually in honour of George Barrington, the 5th viscount and rector of a
coal-mining village named Sedgefield in County Durham in Britain.
