Although Riebeeck East is a small village, it was officially established in 1842 and has a surplus of character and history. The town was originally named Riebeeck but was later changed to Riebeeck East in order to avoid being confused with Riebeeck West, which is located in the Western Cape.

The skyline is dominated by the local church steeple, while the building itself encapsulates the village’s history - notably housing the province’s largest church clock. Riebeeck East logically centres around its church, which remains the religious and social centre of the village.

Another piece of historical architecture is Voortrekker leader Piet Retief’s home, Retief House, which is a national moment and prime example of Cape Dutch architecture.

Riebeeck is also known for the wide variety of game reserves and nature activities that are located nearby. These make the village an ideal location in which to run a bed and breakfast or guesthouse for the large number of tourists that frequent the area.
