Area / Port Shepstone
Introduction
Our lovely area is situated 120 kilometres from the closest major city - Durban and a mere 1 hour's drive from the International Airport situated to the south of Durban's city center. The town was established in 1882 and named after Sir Theophilus Shepstone, the then secretary of Native Affairs. English, German and Norwegian families settled here and grew tea, coffee and sugar. Plantations of these and fruit and nuts together with marble and limestone quarries still form the key commercial industries in the area together with the complimentary traders associated with a busy and thriving community.

Amenities
Port Shepstone houses all the provincial government departments and the seat of the UGU District Municipality. The infrastructure is well developed with many recreational and shopping facilities as well as excellent schools - both private and government based, clinics and hospitals - both private and provincial. There is a 24 hour surveillance system in place together with a coordinated anti crime campaign utilizing local neighborhood watches and professional security companies therefore we enjoy relatively low crime figures.
Attractions

The sea remains our biggest draw card with the warm Indian Ocean temperatures affording year round recreational activity by way of swimming at one of our many netted and patrolled beaches, snorkeling, scuba diving at World renowned dive sites, surfing, wind surfing, jetskiing and fishing from shore or ski boats. Our coast line is one of the World's top destinations for dolphin viewing and for the annual sardine run which occurs during our winter season late June/ July every year, when millions of these fish migrate from cooler waters in the North accompanied by hundreds and thousands of sea birds, dolphins, sharks and game fish.

The annual Whale migration also starts at this time and viewing of Humpbacked and Southern Right Whales can be done with licensed Boat based operators who are well versed in Marine knowledge.

Tourism

If the sea is not your cup of tea then there are numerous cultural and sporting opportunities. Port Shepstone country club offers bowling greens, tennis and squash courts and has a superb 18 hole golf course running along the banks of the Mzimkulu River, there are no fewer than 6 local golf courses all within an hour or less drive from the area, 2 of which are award winning. The Oribi Gorge offers stunning hikes and trials, white water rafting, abseiling and bungey swinging over the spectacular rocky outcrops falling 170 metres to the forest floor where bird calls echo and buck roam. The vintage, narrow gauge Banana Express Steam Train cuts through indigenous sub tropical forests, sugar cane fields and green hills, home to traditional Zulu villages with 6 Zulu Chiefs where traditional whares and dancing can be sought. Each holiday season program is organized by the Hibiscus Coast Tourism Board and features such events as Beach Concerts, Live Music at various venues, Dancing, Pageants and Street Markets.

As this area has such an influx of seasonal holidaymakers it has a vast choice of available accommodation, including hotels with conference facilities and we are always thrilled to welcome visitors and investors to our area as well as very proud of what we have to offer.
