The Area
Mainly farmlands covering undulating hills. The Overberg offers a feeling of wide open spaces with interesting valleys tucked between the rolling hills. Wheat, Canola, Oats and Barley are the main crops of the region, but sheep and dairy farming also feature strongly. On a small scale, vines and olive trees have recently been introduced. Late Winter and early Spring are renowned for the golden fields of canola interspersed with emerald fields of wheat - an unforgettable sight.

The Village and Surrounds

Napier is an easy 30 minute drive from the warm Indian Ocean waters of Arniston or Cape Agulhas, the Southern most tip of Africa. The popular seaside town of Hermanus is 70 Kilometres away and is possibly the closest largish centre, although Bredasdorp on a smaller scale, is an easy 14 km drive. The Coastal Nature Reserve, De Hoop, is also within easy driving distance of the Village on the outer reaches of Bredasdorp. The missionary village of Elim has been declared a national monument in its entirety and is on the other side of Napier’s mountain range, Die Soetmuisberg.

Things to do

There are presently five eateries in the town (and plans for more). Napier Farmstall – renowned for its picturesque setting and great food. The Fox, with true British pub-style home-cooking. Pascal’s, a welcoming cosy bistro experience, Gunners Lodge, which has a memorable balcony overlooking the rural valley and The Sundance should a pizza or pasta be your thing! There are also an abundance of home style preserves, cheeses, organic veggies and the like to be found. The best pies in town can be found at Moerse Farmstall. A toy museum and a military museum where one can watch the owner mould toy soldiers. A magical Fairy Shop for the little girl in you. Napier Antiques and Greta’s Place for Bric ‘n Brac are also well worth browsing. Walks in the surrounding hills promise fynbos delights and sweeping panoramas. A visit to nearby Bredasdorp with its own selection of restaurants, a shipwreck museum and an interesting Candle factory. And to round off the day, a drive to Struisbaai for Calamari Strips and Chips as the sun sets.
