HISTORY OF MOZAMBIQUE

The first documented people in Mozambique were the San people. For many years before Mozambique was discovered by Vasco da Gama on behalf of Portugal, there were numerous Arab trading settlements. In the 1500s, the country became a regular port of call for the Portuguese as they travelled to the East.

Mozambique finally achieved independence from Portugal in 1975 and held its first democratic elections in 1994. At present, the country is still recovering economically from the civil war that occurred between 1977 and 1992.
