| Cape Town, with its backdrop
of Table Mountain, is one of the world's most beautiful
cities. The city spreads out in front of Table Mountain,
which rises more than 1,000m high, flanked by Devil's
Peak in the east and Lions Head and Signal Hill in the
west. The historic leafy green suburbs of Mowbray, Rosebank,
Rondebosch, make up the area, known as Southern Suburbs. |

Rosebank
This is a suburb wedged between Mowbray and Rondebosch
and stretches from the University of Cape Town to the
Rondebosch Common. Homes are predominantly Victorian
and thereafter mostly 1930's architecture with the emphasis
on pillars, high ceilings, arches, oregan pine floors
and traditional fireplaces. Most of the Victorian homes
have been tastefully modernized or are in the process
of being restored. The original farmhouse, Vredenburg,
is a private residence and is being lovingly restored
to its late 1700's glory.
Mowbray
This fascinating historical suburb stretches from Mostert's
Mill, which was built on the farm Welgelegen in about
1796, to the Rondebosch Common and is situated between
the N2 highway and Rosebank. There are at least three
historic homes; Westoe, Moolenvleit and Koornhoop situated
along the Liesbeek River and these are all well maintained.
Mowbray has a real mix of cultures from the thriving
African marketing around the taxi/bus interchange to
the quiet residential areas of Little Mowbray, the Village
and Upper Mowbray.
Rondebosch Park
This unique block of Rondebosch is flanked by the Rondebosch
Common on the West, Park Road on the South, the M5 on
the East and Klipfontein Road on the North. There are
four roads running down the suburb and seven across.
The main feature of the suburb is the magnificent view
of the mountain and it's child friendly attitude. Rondebosch
is home to most students studying at the University
of Cape Town (UCT). The campus stretches up onto the
slopes of Devils Peak.
There are some truly fine examples of Sir Herbert Baker
Architecture as well as some fine Victorian homes. Other
than those the homes are more modern, being mostly post
1950's with some new homes dating back only 10 or so
years.

The
first permanent title to land in the African continent
was issued in Rondebosch. Van Riebeeck named this first
permanent settlement " Het Ronde Doornbosjen"
after a clump of Thorn Trees that had grown from a Hottentots
Cattle Kraal. Van Riebeeck, looking down from Table Mountain
commented on the unsurpassed beauty of the foothills,
which later became known as Rondebosch.
Even today the central area is a huge greenbelt known
as Rondebosch Common, an unspoilt area home to a variety
of beautiful indigenous plants. This area was the original
camp ground for British and Dutch soldiers from 1806.
From this central area, many old historic homes were built.
