Mossel Bay has been dubbed “The Bay of Attractions” by many who have visited it. Not surprising when you consider the long sandy beaches washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean with boat rides, whale watching (from June to November); big game viewing and extreme adventures as well as fascinating museums and excellent shopping and entertainment for the whole family. The dynamic Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex encompasses a wealth of places of historical interest. The most famous of these is possibly the Old post Office Tree. This massive Milkwood tree - more than 500 years old - was the very one under which Pedro de Ataide left an important letter in a show in 1500.
Restaurants for every palate and top notch accommodation for every budget, a scenic harbour and top class golf courses are but a few of the fantastic offerings of this prime destination. But despite all this, it’s actually the pace here that gives Mossel Bay that special edge. Even with all its attractions, there’s something about the town that invites you to sit back, relax and watch life as it happens. In this hurly-burly world, there’s nothing more refreshing.

In whale season, from June to November, the 65 km Whale Route along the greater Mossel Bay coastline is superbly suited to view these graceful giants. Four species are seen along this route, of which Southern Right Whales are the most commonly sighted - when they come deep into the bay to calve.
There are also Humpback, Bryde's and Killer Whales (Orca) frequenting the route which make for spectacular viewing. An exotic bird farm is nearby for bird lovers. Alternatively, relax at one of the many popular surfing and swimming beaches or get out and play a round of golf at theesteemed Pinnacle Point course or Mossel Bay Golf Estate where there is a view of the sea from every tee.
The activities are endless. There are easy, breathtaking hiking trails, such as the St Blaize hiking trail starting from the historical Khoi-San cave at the Point, fun eco-adventure trips, bungee jumping and bridge-swinging, abseiling, safe shark cage diving, as well as scuba diving operations or a trip to Seal Island on a sailing boat.

Gondwana Game Reserve (25km from Mossel Bay) is the first authentic Big Five Safari experience on the Garden Route. Gondwana Game Reserve is situated in the Garden Route 20 minutes from the center of Mossel Bay and its beaches and golf courses. It is a mere 3 hours drive from Cape Town and 40 minutes from George International Airport. Despite this great location and accessibility, the reserve is secluded and remote giving a feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. It shares the areas' renowned temperate climate, second in the world to Hawaii's, and is Malaria free, offering prime year round game viewing.
Visit this incredible reserve for a truly ‘wild’ experience as they have the only free-ranging elephant herd and pride of lion in the Southern Cape.

On 3 February 1488 Bartholomew Dias became the first seafarer from Europe to sail into Mossel Bay. For Dias, the perennial spring near the shore provided fresh water. But it wasn't only their quest for fresh water that made this bay special. It was also the first port where they could communicate - by means of letters left in the now historical monument, the Old Post Office Tree. Mossel Bay was named after the abundant mussels that were found on the coastline. Most of Mossel Bay's beautiful old buildings were the work of Cornish stonemasons who came to South Africa in the latter part of the 1800s.
Throughout history it was the harbour that remained the pulse of the town. By 1902 a new harbour was built and soon the Mossel Bay boating company boasted of being able to clear and dispatch goods within 2 hours of a ships arrival. Fishing, both recreational and commercial, to this day remains an integral part of Mossel Bay.
The Mossel Bay area which including Central Mossel Bay, Santos, Diaz Beach, Bayview, Hartenbos, Little Brak, Great Brak, Danabay, Vleesbaai and Boggomsbaai has a well deserved reputation among the thousands of holiday makers who flock to the dazzling beaches every year. Today Mossel Bay has over 140000 inhabitants.
It has road, rail, sea and air links comparable to any in South Africa. It is less than 4 hours by road to both Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. A double freeway connects it to the modern George airport, only 20 minutes drive away.
The harbour has been improved to meet the growing demands of the fishing fleet and, of course the Petrol SA project.
Some exclusive property development sites have been developed over the last 10 years, namely Mossel Bay Country Estate Nature Reserve and Golf Club, Nautilus Bay, Fisherman’s Village, Diaz Beach and the recently launched Garden Route Casino.
