What started as a humble fishing village,
and became a popular retirement destination, is now
a worldwide destination for thrill seekers and nature
lovers for the Big Two – Great White Sharks and
Southern Right Whales.
The history of this area is diverse
and surprising. Driving up the gravel-road to many original
homesteads is to travel back in time. The Coastal caves,
Klipgat and the Drupkelders echo of the early ancestors
of the Khoisan. The Dangerpoint Lighthouse was established
in 1895 – it was here that the HMT Birkenhead
met her doom in 1852 with the loss of approx. 443 lives. |
