FORT BEAUFORT HISTORY

Fort Beaufort has a military history because of its unique geographical positioning. The town was founded in 1816 as a mission station and a Martello tower was built. The tower was instrumental in the eighth Frontier War as it withstood an offensive by the full Xhosa army. In approximately 1837, Fort Beaufort was built around the tower and the town came into official existence.
The annual Militaria Fair celebrates the history of the town through battle re-enactments and the sale of arts and crafts. History aficionados and visitors can discover sites of historical significance via the Golden Walkway, which is a tour of the area in which nine wars of dispossession were fought.
A historical site of particular interest is Emgwenyeni Flats. This building was once a general store from which Xhosa leader Tsili stole an axe. His arrest and escape led to the War of the Axe between the English and the Xhosa.
Also worth a visit is Healdtown, which was one of the first education and training institutions for black Africans, including political leaders such as Nelson Mandela.
