Welcome to the Mpumalanga Highlands Meander.

This important industrial, agricultural and mining region is located to the south east of Gauteng offering easy weekend access to visitors.

Situated only 2½hours from Gauteng, the Highlands Meander has become a popular tourist destination. It attracts nature lovers, fly fishermen and adventure lovers to the misty mountains and delightful scenery of the Trout Triangle region.

Local Amenities

Accommodation throughout the province is plentiful, but advance booking is advisable if you require specific location such as Sabi Sands game reserves, Kruger National Park or Mpumlanga Parks Board accommodation.

In travelling to the many listed places of interest, you will pass through some dramatic escarpment country. And when travelling within the Kruger National Park allow additional time for your journey due to lower speed limits.
History

The Meander is also rich in history especially that of the Anglo-Boer War.

A number of historical houses and other buildings have been preserved, and decorated with antiques and a photographic history of the Maputo Corridor.

Cultural Heritage

Home to the Ndebele people, noted for their artistic talents; this region offers a variety of tourist destinations. The three nature reserves, Mabusa, Mdala and Mkhombo offer some of the finest nature trails in the region. Further east the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve is a popular weekend destination.

Nearby the Botshabelo Cultural Village and Mission Station is one of the prime attractions in the region.

Tourism

Set high on the temperate Mpumalanga escarpment, the area is formed by towns of Lyndenburg, Montrose, Machadodorp, Belfast and Dullstroom. The Highlands Meander is located on one of the more popular routes to the lowveld and is an ideal stopover for tourists. The Drakensberg Escarpment stretches through much of this area, giving rise to many of the country's rivers. The Grootdraai Dam is a popular watersport destination. This is high country where a number of South Africa's most important rivers, such as the Vaal, rise. The highland grasslands of this region are of international significance as notable birding sites, where a number of rare and endangered species, endemic to the region, attract visitors from all over the world. Mpumalanga Highlands is the fly fisher mans Mecca. Excellent trout fishing, hang-gliding and mountain biking are also popular adventures activities.

Today, apart from one of the best steam train routes, the area is fast becoming recognised as an adventure "HOT SPOT" for Abseiling and rock Climbing.

Strong waters flow through the belly of this old land cutting paths that make the river gentle and the waterfalls wild at times. Many scars of the Anglo-Boer war can be seen here, with monuments and cemeteries providing an instant reminder. The character of Waterval-Boven is influenced by the legacy of the railways and the importance this development bestowed upon the town.

It was its proximity to the railway line that recommended it as the seat of Paul Kruger's government during the Anglo-Boer war. Today it is known more for its temperate climate and superb trout fishing waters than political strategic location. Surrounded by gentle hills, the Elands River runs through the town and Machadodorp's natural sulphur are said to have healing properties.

The trout, tulip and granite capital of Mpumalanga has become the getaway to the Escarpment and the Highlands Meander. A major attraction to this sub-alpine town is the 'flower farm' - an unforgettable sight in September when tulips and daffodils are in full bloom. It is ultimately about relaxing, breathing fresh air, fishing, hiking, dining out or sitting next to a cosy fireplace with a good bottle of wine on a misty night. At 2100m above sea level, it is one of the highest villages in South Africa, which explains its sub-alpine climate. It is an excellent fly-fishing venue with trout introduced in the early 1900's. The area boasts some 120 species of wild flowers, including the beautiful yellow arum lily and over 70 species of field orchards.

A unique valley with pristine rivers and streams with abundant waterlife. And excellent flyfishing in the rivers and dams. There is a large range of natural fauna and flora, such as leopard, kudu, duiker, hippo vervet monkey and baboon. The climate is temperate lending itself to a variety of outdoor recreational activities to suit all age groups - abseiling, archery, fly fishing, 4x4 trails, mountain biking, and climbing, horse-riding and paragliding, to name a few.

Situated at the foothills of the Long Tom Pass, Lyndenberg is a place of history and a town for all seasons. The climate and magnificent surroundings make Lyndenberg the ideal adventure outdoor paradise. Flyfishing and unspoilt nature, a rich diversity of habitats, an abundance of fauna and flora, excellent birdlife, archaeological wonders and spectacular panoramic views, are a taste of what's on offer in this area.

The Elands Valley:

The Elands Falls, the 120-year-old tunnel, the imported turn-of-the-century dressed stone railway tunnel and Five Arch Bridge, and imposing red sandstone cliffs, make this area special. It is also diverse in its fauna and flora, as a result of its position on the escarpment. The Elands River, which supports fishing for trout and Yellow Fish, flow the length of the valley constrained by the mountain ranges on either side. The Valley offers gentle activities, such as birding, touring the old monuments, fly-fishing, mountain-climbing, abseiling, bridge jumping or just relax and enjoy the y-gone age of stream trains.
