Introduction to Ceres

Ceres...Eden of the Cape
90 minutes drive or 130 kilometres north-east of Cape Town, in the heart of the Cape Winelands and the gateway to the Cederberg area and Route 62, nestles the village of Ceres - scenic, sunny and safe. Magnificent mountains, with breathtaking panoramic views and scenic mountain passes, completely surround the valley of fruitfulness, with the Dwars river running through the town. The district consists of four diverse areas each with its own unique charm and landscapes: Warm Bokkeveld -wide fertile valley and a rich agricultural region including Prince Alfred's Hamlet. Bo-Swaarmoed - a distinctive farming area at the foot of Matroosberg. Koue Bokkeveld - this highland fruit and vegetable producing area includes the small village Op-die-Berg. Ceres/ Tanqua Karoo - a spectacular semi-arid area with endless horizons, amazing sunsets, clearest starlit skies and private game reserves.

Overview, History and Culture

Thousands of years ago the area was first inhabited by the San and Koi. Rock painting sites are of the best preserved in the country. First Europeans established stock farms in 1729. In 1849 the town was established. The road through Ceres via Michell’s pass became the main route transporting diamonds to the north in the late 1800’s - now known as the ‘Forgotten Highway’. Subsequent development revolved around agriculture bringing prosperity to the town. The Transport Rider’s Museum tells the story of Ceres and its people and exhibits evidence of an earthquake in 1969, destroying most of the historic buildings.
