Introduction to Bredasdorp

Property / Real Estate in Betty's Bay

The Cape Agulhas region offers a veritable paradise of nature in all her glory, which will delight even the most discerning tourist, botanist, hiker, photographer, historian, bird watcher or angler. Bordered by blue mountain ranges, Bredasdorp is set in undulating hills in a kaleidoscope of gold, green and brown with endless beaches and dunes. Fragrances of fynbos which emerge with mountain and sea air.

The southernmost region of Africa is a sub region of the Overberg and stretches from Gansbaai in the east, through Die Dam, L'Agulhas, Struisbaai and Arniston up to the mouth of the Breede River in the east. It includes the De Hoop Nature and marine Reserve. This undulating landscape, with the Riviersondernd and Langeberg mountain ranges as background, is known as the Ruens, whereas the southern coastal region beyond the Bredasdorp/Napier mountain range is known as the Strandveld.

History
Michiel van Breda established Bredasdorp, South Africa's first "dorp" in 1838, and today forms the economic hub of the Suidpunt region. Van Breda and another leading personality, Pieter Voltelyn van der Byl, could not agree where the Church should be built. As a result two churches were built, and two towns, Bredasdorp and Napier

Fauna And Flora

The white milkwood, once common to this area, has adapted to withstand harsh coastal winds and can grow into a large, umbrella shaped tree. The name milkwood is derived from the white latex found in the bark and the fruit. Nowadays the trees are protected, but in the past the hard, durable timber was used for building boats, bridges and mills. The massive milkwood on the farm Rhenosterfontein, near Bredasdorp, is considered to be one of the largest of its kind and has been declared a national monument.

South Africa's national bird, the large blue crane is critically threatened. The Overberg represents one of the last strongholds for the remaining 14000 birds. In 1991 the local farming community joined forces with Cape Nature Conservation program. Large flocks of blue cranes may be seen on farmlands during winter, and breeding pairs between October and February.

The small common padloper (road walker) or parrot-beaked tortoise was once common in the Overberg. They are still often seen on the roads in the area and present an obstacle course for the unwary driver.

Amentities

The population of this predominantly agricultureal area is about 20 000. Not withstanding its typical rural atmosphere, all essential services are available here. The establishment of Denel's missile test range and the SA Air Force's Test Flight and Development Centre in the mid-eighties near Arniston, and the movement of the Overberg District Council's Head office to Bredasdorp, accelerated the development of the town.
