Property for sale in Bedford, Eastern Cape
BEDFORD REAL ESTATE – CHARMING EASTERN CAPE PROPERTY

Often referred to as the ‘hidden treasure’ of the Eastern Cape, Bedford is a quaint village that offers a pleasant reprieve from the hustle and bustle of South Africa’s cities such as East London and Port Elizabeth. Situated near the foot of Kaga Mountain, Bedford combines with its neighbouring village of Adelaide to form the Nxuba Municipality.

The town has a distinct historical atmosphere and Bedford real estate is typically full of character. Many of the buildings are old, but well maintained, and are excellent examples of colonial-style settler homes. With its tree-lined streets and wide open spaces, Bedford has a slow pace and offers a stress-free lifestyle.

Pam Golding Properties has been privy to the charm of Bedford real estate and we offer a selection of residential, commercial and farm properties. A Bedford house is affordable in comparison to similar size properties available elsewhere in South Africa, cosmopolitan areas in particular. Furthermore, because the village is relatively sparsely populated, Bedford property is spaced out, giving residents a sense of seclusion and privacy.

PROPERTY IN BEDFORD

While Bedford may be a small village in the Eastern Cape, it offers a variety of properties for sale, including residential, commercial, farm and vacant land. One of the benefits of choosing a Bedford property is that no matter what type of property you choose, you can enjoy your space, spectacular views and astonishing natural surroundings.

Real estate in Bedford comprises the following types of property options:

  • Bedford house – Because villages in South Africa are typically sparsely populated, plots tend to be large and spaced out. This is true of Bedford and residents can be assured of their privacy. When buying a Bedford house, one has a choice of purchasing an existing house, typically with four to five bedrooms, or purchasing an empty plot on which you can build your own home.

  • Bedford flats – Owing to relatively low population of the village and the affordability of large properties, there was little need to build Bedford flats. This means that flats in the area are rare. Contact your Pam Golding Properties Bedford real estate agent for more information on flats in this village.

  • Bedford rentals – Villages offer a significantly different experience to that found in a big city and Bedford rentals give both locals and foreigners the opportunity to experience small town South Africa.

  • Bedford farms – Farming is a big industry in South Africa and Bedford farms can help real estate buyers to enter into this industry. Farmlands are plentiful and Pam Golding Properties offers a wide selection in the area surrounding Bedford.

ABOUT BEDFORD

Bedford
Along with Adelaide, Bedford forms part of Nxuba Municipality. The village’s nearest cities are Port Elizabeth and East London. Bedford may be a small town, but property owners are seldom bored because there are many activities to keep residents busy. Residents enjoy socialising and there are many clubs and groups that meet on a regular basis. Activities that can be enjoyed include gardening, craft making, bridge, book club meetings, quilting, Pilates and callanetics.

Bedford began its existence as a supply centre for farmers in the surrounding area and it remains closely related to the agricultural industry of the Eastern Cape. On the last Saturday of every month, a morning market is held and delicious organic foods are readily available.

The Kaga Mountain range surrounds Bedford and creates a mini climate which is excellent for both farming and gardening. The Bedford Garden Festival attracts plant lovers from all over South Africa and traditionally occurs towards the end of October. Furthermore, the natural surroundings offer premium opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, birding, horse riding, abseiling and paragliding.

The Mill Cricket Club caters for sports fanatics who like to remain active and those who enjoy discovering history will appreciate the numerous rock art sites in the area. These historical paintings were created by the San people who made the area their home many years before it was colonised.

There are several villages and towns nearby, including Paterson, Riebeeck East, Fort Beaufort and Alicedale. The close proximity of these towns to each other creates a sense of community that is not often found in cosmopolitan cities.

Contact Pam Golding Properties now to view Bedford properties or historical real estate in its neighbouring towns: Adelaide, Paterson, Riebeeck East, Alicedale and Fort Beaufort.

BEDFORD HISTORY

Church in BedfordAs with many towns in the Eastern Cape, Bedford is brimming with rich history. The village was established in approximately 1857 and is named after the Duke of Bedford. The village’s history is documented by the continued existence of many old and colonial-style buildings, including the Bedford Club, Glen Lynden church, 1820 Settler Memorial Church and Eildon farm.

The Eildon farm is home to the 1820 Settler Scottish, as well as the grave of its owner and respected settler, Thomas Pringle. Another famous resident of Bedford was M. L. de Villiers. He was a minister in the village but is better known as one part of the composing team that wrote, “Die Stem van Suid Afrika”, South Africa’s national anthem from 1957 to the end of Apartheid in 1994 – when it was incorporated into the current national anthem.

Property in Bedford, whether recently built or established years ago, has an undeniable charm and character that provide a rich residential experience.
