Rolling dunes, golden beaches, the blue of the sea,
craggy cliffs and quaint fisherman's cottages, are all
part of this delightful village with two names.
Known by the locals as Waenhuiskrans, named after the
huge sea cavern, which is so large it was said an ox-wagon
and team of oxen could turn full circle inside the cave.
The cave is accessible at low tide and lies about 1km
south of the village.
To others the village is known as Arniston, named after
the East Indiaman Arniston, which was wrecked nearby
in 1815 with a tragic loss of 37 lives. |
