ALICEDALE REAL ESTATE – DISCOVER THE WILDLIFE OF THE EASTERN CAPE

Alicedale ChurchAlicedale began its existence as a quaint Victorian railway town. Located approximately 25 kilometres from Grahamstown and slightly north of the world-renowned Shamwari Game Reserve, Alicedale provides residents and visitors with a true small town atmosphere.

Real estate in Alicedale was popular during the town’s heyday but waned for a period after the railway was closed in 1996. It is thanks to Adrian Gardiner, the chairman or Mantis Collection and owner of Shamwari, who spearheaded an initiative to restore the Alicedale to its former glory by reducing levels of poverty and unemployment

The Eastern Cape government assisted him in his endeavour and together, they lifted Alicedale’s reputation for sustainable ecological and community tourism by creating the Bushman Sands development, which comprises a four-star hotel, game reserve, golf course, conference centre and spa.

Pam Golding Properties specialises in offering real estate in towns, cities and villages throughout the Eastern Cape. As an up-and-coming town, Alicedale offers affordable properties whose values are expected to greatly increase in the foreseeable future.

ABOUT ALICEDALE
Alicedale Locals on a cart

The first known inhabitants of Alicedale were the Khoisan people. Details of their existence were documented in rock art that can be found in the Bushman Sands Reserve.

Alicedale, South Africa, began its existence as a small Victorian village around a railway siding. In the early 1870s, a railway station was built on the line between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown.

The town is thought to be named after the project’s lead engineer’s fiancée, Alice Date. While this cannot be confirmed, the romantic story has become a favourite of locals and historians.

Today, Alicedale property comprises lovingly restored Victorian-style buildings predominantly. Houses are typically affordable and large, varying from three to five bedrooms. Eastern Cape farms remain a popular purchase and there are often a number of Cape farms available for purchase in the areas neighbouring Alicedale.

A perfect example of what can be done with farms for sale in the Eastern Cape is the Bushman Sands development, which has revived the popularity of Alicedale. The development innovatively and beautifully restored the original Victorian architecture; the main building is a declared national monument and was built at the beginning of the 20th century by Scottish masons. Also, the old Alicedale railway station, which was established in 1901, has been adapted to house the development’s conference centre.

Because Alicedale is a small town, it doesn’t have extensive facilities and amenities. However, Grahamstown is located nearby and residents can make use of its shopping, medical and educational facilities.

The tourism and game industry offers employment opportunities as Alicedale and the Bushmans River area sees a steady influx of visitors from South Africa and the rest of the world.

ENJOY SAFARIS IN AN EASTERN CAPE GAME RESERVE

While Alicedale is located right on the doorstep of Bushman Sands, it is also near to Pumba and Shamwari private game reserves. African safaris in these game reserves give people the opportunity to see wildlife roaming free.

Using expertise from Shamwari, Bushman Sands has returned its land back to its pristine condition and restocked the area with indigenous game. One of the best ways in which to experience the natural beauty of this part of Africa is on a sundowner cruise on the New Years Dam.

However, in the Eastern Cape, a game reserve offers more than just a way in which to view wildlife, it offers a escape from the stress of everyday life through luxurious facilities.

Facilities in Alicedale such as its quaint chapels, the Bushman Sands conference centre and golf course provide ample opportunities for events such as weddings, business team-building and conferences, and major sports tourism ventures. The 18-hole championship course on the golf estate was designed by Gary Player and is a superior course and an attraction for golfing enthusiasts. It runs along the New Years and Bushman rivers and golfers play their first stroke over the railway line.

In October 2004, the four-star Bushman Sands Hotel opened and offers a successful balance of rich history and contemporary luxury. Its world-class facilities include a gym, spa and wellness centre, at which residents and guests can enjoy personalised treatments or make use of the hydrotherapy centre.

The conference centre is able to accommodate from 12 to 90 delegates and a variety of team-building activities can be arranged on request.
