While the area is known as a natural paradise, it also includes practical solutions for everyday living. The Adelaide Primary School is a high-quality learning centre that caters for the town’s children’s educations, while the Adelaide Gymnasium is a dual-medium high school.

ADELAIDE HISTORICAL ATTRACTIONS

Originally a military garrison in 1834, the town was given its name in honour of Queen Adelaide, who was a consort of King William IV. At that point, the majority of the population comprised Scottish settlers. The Glenthorn Presbyterian Church, built in 1840, exhibits the Scottish architectural influence of the 19th century.

Adelaide was used as a transit camp for British troops during the War of Mlanjeni and was home to Jan Smuts and his commando during the Anglo-Boer war.

Many historically relevant documents and artefacts of the town are currently housed in Adelaide’s Heritage Museum. The building itself is historical and is an excellent example of a colonial home, complete with clothing, porcelain, Wedgwood and silver items of the time.

To the north east of Adelaide, one will find Piet Retief’s farm, built in 1836. It was used as protection for the local farming community against Xhosa warriors during the Eighth Frontier War.
